God chooses to pass on to his created beings as much of his goodness and glory as we are capable of receiving. God's pure holiness and awesome glory limits us in our ability to relate to him in anything other than absolute dependence. We present ourselves as empty vessels before God in the knowledge of our inability to fulfill his will for our lives outside of his power. Humility opens us up to receive power from God. Without humility we are unable to truly trust God with our true selves.
The opposite of humility being pride is the root of all sin and evil. We cannot exalt God and self simultaneously. In order for the Holy Spirit to work in and through us we must kill self pride. We must take off the old self and put on the new.
Jesus brought humility to earth that we may become partakers of it and to save us from our own destructive pride. He humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death. His humility gave value to his death and became our redemption. His humility in relation to the Father is the root of his redeeming work. His humility is our salvation. His salvation is our humility. Through humility we abide in the Father and experience undeserved favor. Humility simply put allows us to take our place in relation to a holy God.
